The stories in this book were told to me in several languages, in many locations, between 2017 and 2021. Some interviews have been translated, others took place in English, even if it was not always the speaker’s mother tongue.

In many instances the storytelling was not linear: a name or place might be recalled towards the end of a conversation, the retelling of a traumatic event could temporarily disrupt the speaker’s flow, a missing piece of information might arrive in my inbox in the days, weeks and even years that followed our first meeting. The text has been edited with a light touch; my aim is to honour the extraordinary range of voices and experiences recorded in A Wounded Landscape.
